1. Is single-league format better than playoffs?
Manchester City won the Premier League while it wasn't even playing. But FC Yahoo's Ryan Bailey says it still beats a playoff system.
2. Manchester City are 2017-18 Premier League champions
Manchester City have been crowned Premier League champions for the 2017/18 season as Pep Guardiola‘s side were handed the crown following Manchester United’s shock home defeat against West Brom on Sunday. There’s no doubting how special City’s first PL title was after a 44-year wait to become Champions of England again, and especially the way they won it on the final day of the season with two late goals to deny rivals United winning the title in 2011/12.
3. PSG clinches Ligue 1 title with win over Monaco, and with ease
PSG players celebrate one of many goals in a title-clinching win over Monaco. (AP) There are very few certainties in soccer. Very few foregone conclusions. Very few outcomes that never – not at any point throughout an entire season – were newsworthy.
4. The long-lasting impact of America's Copa Centenario
As the World Cup looms closer, a growing level of frustration in the United States soccer community would be understandable. But even though the U.S. national team will not be in Russia, the country can take some comfort from the role it played in shaping the road to the World Cup, especially as far as the South American teams are concerned. Nowadays the Copa America is played every four years, kicking off a new cycle of competitive action. In the year after the World Cup there has been nothing but friendlies. The Copa helps whip teams into shape for the next batch of World Cup qualifiers, which get underway soon afterwards. In this cycle, of course, there was the extra Copa -- the event to celebrate
5. Here’s what Rüdiger actually said on German TV about Conte dropping him
It was the quote heard all-around Chelsea fandom, especially as it was the only negative vibe to follow what was an emotional, joyful, lifeforce-affirming victory down on the South Coast at St Mary’s. Few things make for such happy viewing experiences as comebacks, and Chelsea’s two-goal variety was the kind not seen from the Blues in the Premier League since 2002. Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella, who’s become one of our go-to sources as far as the Chelsea beat is concerned, was one of the first, if not the first to float the idea that Rüdiger was dropped from the matchday squad against Southampton for stepping out of line with his comments to the media the weekend before. To most, Rüdiger’s words after the 1-1 draw against West Ham were nothing but the honest and thus un-sugarcoated truth, and were not really all that different from what other players were saying. Chelsea were giving easy points away, gifting goals, not fighting or concentrating for 90 minutes, and so on.
6. UEFA 'strongly condemns' Michael Oliver abuse
Abuse sent to Michael Oliver and his wife following the referee's controversial penalty decision in the Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Juventus has been strongly condemned by UEFA. READ MORE: Buffon is Europe’s longest-serving one-club man but who joins him in the top 10? Cristiano Ronaldo smashed home the penalty to send Madrid through while Buffon continued his protestations and slammed Oliver after the game, with the Italian attracting strong criticism as a result.
7. Performing bear at Russian soccer match causes outrage
A performing circus bear used at a soccer match in Russia has drawn worldwide criticism from animal welfare groups. Rough cut (no reporter narration).
8. Newcastle United v Arsenal
Preview followed by live coverage of Sunday's Premier League game between Newcastle United and Arsenal.
9. Rumor Mongering: Thomas Lemar Links Reemerge
For months before the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, and well past the point when such a sale seemed a matter of “when” not “if,” the media narrative was that Jürgen Klopp & Co. would need a Coutinho replacement. And for months, from waning days of the summer transfer window, all the way through the January transfer window, Monaco’s attacking midfielder Thomas Lemar seemed to be a leading candidate for said replacement. Of course, both windows closed without a “Coutinho replacement” and Klopp’s Liverpool side have been having a laugh ever since—scoring goals for fun, beating the English champs three times, and playing their way into the Champions League semifinals. Phil who? And yet,
10. How Toronto FC, Chivas overlap through Chivas USA
Jeff Carlisle covers MLS and the U.S. national team for ESPN FC. The match-up in this year's CONCACAF Champions League final is awash in irony. Toronto FC and C.D. Guadalajara will square off in Tuesday's first leg at BMO Field and on the surface, there seems to be little that connects the two sides. TFC has been around for just over 10 years. Chivas has been around for over 110 and has a long, storied history that includes fielding only Mexican players. But when the relationship is expanded to include Chivas USA, Guadalajara's now-defunct sister club that played in MLS from 2005 to 2014, the connections are evident. Defender Eriq Zavaleta spent a year on loan with Chivas USA during the team's
11. How does Man City stack up against best PL teams in history?
Manchester City’s disappointment in the UEFA Champions League shouldn’t define its 2017/18 season, particularly because of the excellence of the squad in the Premier League. With a 16-point margin over rivals Manchester United, the Citizens could very easily shatter the record for largest point gap between first and second place. United did that back in 1999/2000 when Sir Alex Ferguson‘s club finished 18 points above Arsenal.
12. Hector Herrera puts Porto on track for title with dramatic 90th-minute winner (Video)
FC Porto’s Hector Herrera celebrates his late winner by holding up his jersey to the Benfica crowd. Thanks to Mexican international Hector Herrera, it got it. The Portuguese Primeira Liga is one of just a few top-flight leagues still undecided heading into the season’s final month.
13. Alexander-Arnold triggers pay rise
Glenn Price Liverpool Correspondent Trent Alexander-Arnold triggered a pay rise in his Liverpool contract after making his 30th first-team appearance in February, a source has confirmed to ESPN FC. Alexander-Arnold signed a five-year deal with Liverpool in July that included a number of triggers for pay increases when milestone appearances were reached. A source said that was common policy for the club when it comes to young players. His 30th outing for his boyhood club came on Feb. 11 when Liverpool beat Southampton 2-0 at St Mary's Stadium. It subsequently led to a pay increase reported to be around £40,000 a week. The 19-year-old is enjoying his first season as a regular in Jurgen Klopp's
14. Batshuayi's Dortmund season over; World Cup still possible
DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Striker Michy Batshuayi's World Cup participation for Belgium is still possible despite suffering a left ankle injury in Borussia Dortmund's Ruhr derby defeat to Schalke. Batshuayi was hurt in injury time on Sunday, left the stadium in Gelsenkirchen on crutches, and was taken to hospital for treatment. Dortmund says on Twitter he "will probably be out for the rest of the season (but) an appearance for the Belgian national team at the World Cup in Russia is in the realm of possibility. Get well soon, Michy!" Batshuayi also took to social media, tweeting his season "is probably over, and I wont be able to pay @BVB back for their confidence ... Thank you all the amazing
15. The Breakdown: FC Dallas at New England
FC Dallas went to Foxboro on Saturday night and came away with a huge road win. New England has been quite good at "Fortress Foxboro" this season, sporting a 2-0-1 record at home prior to Saturday. Jacori Hayes came up with the road game-winner to bring home all three points in an impressive Dallas road win. Formation and Tactics FCD switched things up and came out in a 4-4-2. As I called for earlier in the week, Christian Colman got the start up top with Maxi Urruti. The Huntsmen later switched to a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 (whichever you want to call it) as they fought to hold the lead.  Since it worked, we can say this was a really nice piece of defensive subbing and shape change.  I liked the concept
16. Bayern-Madrid not about revenge
Bayern Munich star James Rodriguez has denied to AS that the upcoming Champions League semifinals against Real Madrid are an opportunity for revenge. James spent three seasons at the Bernabeu, joining as an €80 million signing following the 2014 World Cup and providing 36 goals and 41 assists in 111 games as he won seven trophies -- including the Champions League twice and La Liga in 2016-17. The Colombia international never settled into a regular first-team spot, however, and was loaned to Bayern last summer, with the Bundesliga club likely, but not certain, to take up a €42m option to make the deal permanent. James said that although the semifinal legs, in Munich on April 25 and in Madrid on
17. Neymar admits to tension with Cavani and tears with Messi
Neymar has admitted that his relationship with Paris Saint-Germain strike partner Edinson Cavani suffered from "a certain friction" earlier in the season but he insisted the matter was overplayed. After the Brazil international joined PSG in a record-breaking deal from Barcelona in the close-season, he soon found himself competing with Uruguayan team-mate Cavani for penalty-taking duties and the pair were involved in a heated argument on the pitch during a 2-0 victory over Lyon in September 2017. The incident tainted the atmosphere around Unai Emery's team and rumours surfaced that Cavani could be sold as a result of reported tension between the pair.
18. Herrera helps earn a dramatic victory; Lozano claims his first Eredivisie title
The good times keep rolling for several high-profile Europeos. In recent weeks, there seems to be no lack of goals and noteworthy performances from some of the most prominent El Tri names. Looking back at the past few days, it was easy for Mexican soccer fans to continue to feel positive after watching Hector Herrera score a dramatic match-winner and Hirving Lozano secure his first Eredivisie title. There's plenty to cover this week, so without further ado, here's the latest edition of the Heroes and Villains list for the Mexicans in Europe. Heroes We have to start with Hector Herrera. During Sunday's much-anticipated O Classico between Porto and Benfica, Herrera stepped up as the undeniable
19. Man United's full-back weakness exposed again
Musa Okwonga Manchester United's 1-0 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion was a collective failure, one where Jose Mourinho and almost every one of his players were substandard. As a result, it seems unfair to single anyone out. What is important, though, is to identify a key area where the team have both advanced and regressed, and this is in relation to United's full-backs. Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia are two of the squad's most reliable performers, defensively diligent from week to week, but there is a sense that their best instincts have long been suppressed. This isn't something that can be laid solely -- or even primarily -- at the door of Mourinho, since the issue arose some time
20. Wenger: Loss to Newcastle “the story of Arsenal’s season”
The 2017-18 Premier League season just hasn’t been Arsenal’s season, and Sunday’s 2-1 defeat away to 10th-place Newcastle United so perfectly exemplified the Gunners’ eight months’ worth of struggles, according to manager Arsene Wenger. Having gone up 1-0 after 14 minutes, the fatigue of having played away to CSKA Moscow on Thursday eventually caught up to Arsenal as they fell to a fifth straight PL defeat away from the Emirates Stadiu.
21. How PSG's 5th league title in 6 seasons was a procession
PSG's league title win with five games to spare was a procession, one which started from the moment Monaco sold the spine of its title-winning side last summer. While Monaco made a small fortune selling for 360 million euros ($440 million), PSG broke the world record by signing Neymar from Barcelona for 222 million euros ($260 million) and further weakened Monaco by signing its teen star Kylian Mbappe in a deal worth $180 million ($216 million). Selling Mbappe to its chief rival merely underlined how Monaco fought so little to keep its title, seemingly favoring making a huge profit over competing strongly. With Lyon and Marseille both prone to inconsistency and unable to mount a credible challenge,
22. Dembele vows prove himself at Barcelona
Ousmane Dembele has told Telefoot that he does not fear fierce competition for places at Barcelona and will stay at the club to prove his ability after a difficult first season. A left thigh injury sidelined Dembele for three-and-a-half months in the first half of the campaign, just weeks after moving from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth up to €147 million, and a problem with the same muscle saw him ruled out again after the turn of the year. Since returning to fitness, the France international has struggled to establish himself in Ernesto Valverde's starting XI. Just seven of his 12 La Liga appearances this season have been starts, while the 20-year-old has started on the bench for three of his team's last four competitive outings, including both legs of the Champions League quarterfinal exit at the hands of Roma.
23. Man Utd reserves relegated from top flight
Rob Dawson MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United's reserves have been relegated. The club's under-23 team dropped out of Premier League Two's top division after Derby County beat West Ham 1-0 on Monday. With one game remaining, Ricky Sbragia's team are now assured of finishing in the bottom two of Division One's 12 teams and will spend next season in Division Two alongside the likes of Fulham and Reading. United's reserves have been crowned champions of Division One in three of the past five seasons but a dismal campaign this term has seen them win just four of their 21 games. Sbragia is in his first season in charge of the U23s since returning to Old Trafford in the summer. The under-23s'
24. Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal sidelined with knee injury
MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal has been ruled out of the German Cup semifinals and is in doubt for next week's Champions League match against Real Madrid. Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes says Vidal needs keyhole surgery on his right knee after twisting it awkwardly when he slipped on Sunday in training. Vidal will miss Tuesday's game at Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup. Bayern will face Madrid eight days later in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals. Heynckes says "Arturo will definitely be out for a short while." Vidal made 22 Bundesliga appearances this season, chipping in six goals, while he also made eight Champions League and four German Cup appearances.
25. Man City wins Premier League after United loses to West Brom
Manchester City won the Premier League title without even playing on Sunday when nearest challenger Manchester United surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to last-place West Bromwich Albion. It was City's third title in seven seasons and easily its most convincing, with Pep Guardiola's team 16 points clear and still having five games to play this season. City's other two Premier League triumphs, in 2012 and '14, were sealed on the final day. Second-place United dragged the title race out for at least another week by winning 3-2 at City last weekend, only to gift the trophy to City by losing to a team that is destined for relegation and had just one league win since August. Guardiola might not have seen
26. The numbers behind Man City’s amazing title run
Manchester City’s third Premier League title in seven seasons happened in the English top-flight’s joint-fastest fashion, with five matches left in the 2017-18 match calendar. — Man City has a 16-point lead on Manchester United with five matches to play, two off the record pace of 18 set by the Red Devils in 1999-2000. — City’s 93 goals stand seven shy of the century mark, a feat only turned in the Premier League era by Chelsea in 2009-10 (103), Manchester City in 2013-14 (102), and Liverpool in 2013-14 (101).
27. Top 10 moments: Man City’s PL title-winning season
7. 16-0 in back-to-back-to-back weeks — Sept. 9-Sept.23 — An unstoppable force — Liverpool (more on that game a little later), Watford and Crystal Palace were on the wrong end of City’s most dominant, ruthless run of a the season: a three-game stretch which saw them soar by a combined score of 16-0 (it would then be extended to 24-2 over the three ensuing games, thanks in large part to a 7-2 thrashing of Stoke City three weeks later). 6. Newcastle United 0-1 Man City — Dec. 27 — 18 straight wins — City’s PL-record 18-game winning streak began on Aug. 26 and didn’t end until New Year’s Eve (a span of 127 day before points dropped). The unbeaten start would go on another two weeks before ending at 22 games with a thrilling defeat away to Liverpool two weeks into the new year.
